4 Days of Fly Fishing the Rocky Mountains! || Fly Fishing for Rainbow and Brown Trout
FLY FISHING FOR BIG BROWN TROUT AND RAINBOW TROUT IN THE ROCKY MOUNTAINS!
In this video Andrew and I spent 4 days trout fishing in the late winter of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Colorado has arguably some of the best trout water in America and although winter trout fishing can be tough, you can always find some good fishable water. Fly fishing paradise!
If you were going to choose to go out to the Rocky Mountains to fly fish I’d say most people would rather do it just about any time other than the winter… But unfortunately Andrew and I don’t get to choose when we go fishing, so when Andrew hit me up and said he needed some help moving I jumped at the opportunity to tangle with some late winter Trout in Colorado. I mean, cmon, who would turn down a chance to fish some of the best trout water in America?
SOME WINTER TROUT FISHING TIPS AND TRICKS (for the rockies):
1. One thing worth mentioning when you’re out trying to make the best of a winters day is to look for the best weather to fish. If you go to your planned location and it’s a blizzard, try a different area. Weather in the mountains is unpredictable and sometimes a 30 minutes drive can be the difference between you catching fish and you digging your car out of a snow bank. In this case we turned a seemingly miserable day into a moment of bliss.
2. When you’re winter fishing sometimes it’s worth looking for tailwater and small creeks that aren’t completely frozen over. Tailwaters work well because their flows and water temperatures are regulated by dams which provides a more stable environment for trout in both the winter and the summer, while small streams virtually guarantee that you’re putting your flies in front of fish. Plus, in a lot of small streams the fish don’t have a ton to eat to begin with, so offering up a juicy stonefly or jig streamer may just be too much for them to resist.
3. HEAD SOUTH! One thing that I’ve always tended to do when the weather is cold is to head south. And whether that’s me going down to NC or Georgia when I’m out east, or in this case, heading down further south in Colorado, I can almost always find warmer weather… or at least and area with less snow.
I ended the trip with one more good brown and then we headed out. Interestingly enough I caught my last brown of the trip and my first brown of the trip on the same fly, a small leach jig streamer we had gotten at a fly shop outside of Colorado Springs. As with all trips, the ending was bittersweet. We had explored some new areas, caught some good fish, and enjoyed our time fishing in the Rocky Mountains. As for me, I headed back to West Virginia to get back to the regular grind of my day job. As for Andrew, he settled into Colorado and has been living there ever since. We don’t get to spend nearly as much time on the water as we did before his move out west, but that just makes every trip more memorable. I truly hope you enjoyed this video and if you’d like to see more long form, film style videos let me know. And as always, thanks for watching.
Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed this fly fishing film!

Man there is just something that sets you guys apart from any other cannel. Another mazing vid! Thanks for everything you guys do
Way cool but a tad breezy
What kind of euro fly line do you use ?
What a great place with plenty of fish, I still have difficulty appreciating the size of your fish when you just measure them. As I’ve said before here in the UK we always weigh our fish. The scenery looks stunning but you didn’t show us any mountains.
Awsome video guys looks cold ive fished in colorado with spinner and it was so cold the line and spinner would freeze whole we were realing in but we had fun lol dont think we even caught anything hut we were in the kountains fishing that’s all we cared about
"Such a creative and engaging video!"
Hey Andrew what reel are you using with your T&T contact ll?
Awesome video 😍🙌🏼

So well documented in a magical place. Makes me want to wet a hook. Great job.
Long or short I never miss a Hardman video. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Nice, Guys. I can only dream of going on these trips.

Yo the rockies are the best for brown trout let’s goooo👍🎣
hey ive been watching and i fish as well on sea finesse, fly fishing, karp, catfish, tuna, mackerel, sea trout, pike, bass and whatever but i do not understand how there are only 80K subs on this channel. true it is a bit over the top sometimes like a hollywood scene but the skills are top notch. my brother and i fish together as well so i see myself a bit in you guys. to increase the subs hy dont u go oversaeas or collab with multiple youtubers?
sincerely
What a fun video. But not surprised. I always enjoy watching you fish AND always learn valuable lessons for my future excursions!
I just needed to say…I hate you. I really hate you. I know that you put in the time, and we only see the good takes…but you catch WAY TOO MANY huge beautiful trout. Totally jealous.
Nice fish. With the wind blowing like that, I’d be tempted to get out my spinning rod, though.😊😊😊
I live here in Colorado, and I must say you chose some of my favorite spots to fish. Keep it up!
What rod and reel are you using? Great videos 💪
Why are you bothering the fish, when the fish becomes a handkerchief, its skin becomes vulnerable to drops and parasites, this is 100% wrong 😡
What an adventure. Jon and Andrew in the dead of winter give hope of spring. Thanks HFA!
big streamer = big browns
Man this winter has sucked!!! There aint snow anywhere like what?
let’s goooo
made my week
king of fishing
Patiently waiting for new Colorado footage, but this does it.
What rods and reels line everything used if u don’t mind me asking
I hope this isn’t a stupid question but I noticed in lots of your videos your stripped line still has memory loop from when it was on a spool – is that something that people gotta worry about? Everyone online tells me it’s detrimental to stretch it out but you’re slaying with no issues at all. Love the content man, cheers.
Another amazing video, guys. By FAR my favorite channel on YouTube!
Always awesome to see you guys out in my local area of Colorado. Keeps me fishing keep up the good videos!
Fishing out west is on my bucket list , enjoyed
I remember that video, you start this vodeo with, in brutal circumstances. But ecxellent fishing. I am not a winter flyfishing guy but I admire you two doing that and present us with your astonishing video’s. Well done pals!
Great day of fishing in spite of the wind!
Love watching this channel ❤️
Ok, at 1:55 ur throwing into a Gale and downstream thus fly drifts right at you.
Why not move Upstream and toss with wind behind you.??
Also what flies were y’all using..??
Just curious…
Love the HFA West adventures, even if they’re old.
What size fly rod and reel would you suggest for this kind of fishing?
How do I find small streams with fish? I cant seem to find any in Colorado that hold any trout, how do I find the ones that do?
We have a river like that here in Utah. The big browns just stack up in a certain deep hole. I have seen up to 26" caught in it. It’s always an awesome time when I go there. Great video!
Can u tell me the specs of the gear u normally use in the video and what du u suggest to use in which type of water ? Thx. love ur video btw.
You should fish the Provo river in Utah it has some of the best fishing for Brown Trout
Colorado is great! Just stay away from anything close to Denver. Those idiots ruin everything from skiing to hiking to fishing
