Thanks for the lesson. I stored this on my FAVORITES list. I’ve never been fly fishing but now, at eighty, I want to tey. Truth be told, I was last fishing at about 8-9 yrs old.
Really helpful tips for me man thank you. I especially found the slack for casting helpful as that was really confusing to me at first.
You have a good video
About to buy my first set up today!! So excited. Just moved out to Oregon and I need me my first steelhead ASAP.
what real and rid combo are you using if you don’t mind me asking? in this video
When you start to sharpen hooks you can’t stop doing it because the hook is sharpen then harden to say sharp. I learned this in the 80’s when Lazer Sharp hooks came out or I just learned that they were at the store. But eagle 🦅 claw had a sharpener for hooks I haven’t seen those in years.
Its somewhat similar to getting used to a casting reel & making every cast count
What’s best bait to star with never fly fished before what’s biggest bait you recommend throwing
wait wtf isnt this the guy who does the camera gear reviews? how is he in every hobby i have???
Thx for the tips!

#DOLLARHIDE: ‘…control all of this excess line properly’
I knew I recognized you from Photography videos!
Spelled it wrong wait wait sinker or something 😂❤❤
I’m left handed and I hold my fly rod like a right handed person because I’m used to using left handed fishing rods sure I can use right handed rods to me I have a preference to hold it with my right hand and fight a fish that way
Solid advice. I picked up a lot by reading books on the subject when I started my fly fishing "career" back in the 80s. This was way before Internet and YouTube, but I had a good library nearby. Even some stories from a guy who used to fish in northern Finland back in late 1800s up at Petsamo. That’s what got me hooked.
Not actually fishing much for three decades, I recently began again and noticed that a lot had changed with new gear and techniques, but the fundamentals are the same.

Man oh man, what a simple concept to understand, yet one I’ve never personally heard of. Will keep this in mind
What a great video! Thanks for putting info out there. Do you have any advice on when the line is snapping on the back cast?? Or is it a matter of getting a feel for casting?
I’m currently learning to fly fish after a long time purely carp fishing. This is all amazing advice. This guy is brilliant, im gonna be watching all of his videos on youtube ❤❤❤
Dont sweat the "self taught" method…. I was half and half starting 10 years ago when i made it to Montana,,,,,,, Sometimes nowadays i seem like I watch more vids than actual fish lol
This is one of the greats videos for beginners thank you
Great video
thank you very much appreciate it!!!!
Thanks, I needed this.
Well… I was stoked for the idea of taking up fly fishing until the very end of this video. I know that messing with a tangled ball of yarn isn’t for me. 🤣
Thanks man!
Thanks mate that was super useful I’ve been fishing in UK (born there) so carp, bream, cat fish, other species but that’s ledger and float, and mainly ponds and lakes. I now live in Switzerland and it’s really only trout fishing here they all into spinning which I’ve done a fair bit for like and bass (off the coast) so fly fishing totally new to me and light weight gear. I’ve yet to catch a fish after few hours out. My issues is getting the line out to at least further than where fish can see me 😝 so this helps. But also after losing few flies at what point do you tie a new line on (leader) as it gets shorter right every time you need to add a new fly? Probably a simple thing but something I’m like, well at what point do I say this leader is too small? Also casting when I’ve got shit behind me I’ve tried rolling it out off another video but do you have a video for that. Ie how do I get best presentation as mine looks like a dogs fucking dinner 😂
What’s a good beginner combo?
Good tips, thanks.
My toxic trait: Tying my fly line at home and stomping into the water as soon as i get there to walk across the river to fish the opposite bank 🤣🤣
Nature’s bounty at its finest
That was an excellent video. Were I to add anything it would be how both hands are so involved simultaneously when setting the hooks.
Thank you for the tips! My wife and daughter just got me my first fly rod this year, and your advice has helped!
My sincerest thanks!!!
I’m coming from fishing with an open face spinning reel. My dad’s gotten into fly fishing and I’m trying to wrap my head around it lol.
This was a great video with helpful tips, and I’m thankful you took the time to make it. Best of luck to you on your journey!
